Community Radio Going Digital Print

Community Radio set to go Digital!
13th May 2009

Community broadcasters are celebrating the arrival of much anticipated Federal Government funding to support the start of the sector’s participation in digital radio.

Having been promised funding in 2007, the sector was disappointed when it was deferred in the 2008 budget. The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) is very pleased that digital radio funding for a three year period commencing 09/10 has now been confirmed in accordance with the Federal Government’s earlier commitment.

Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, has been supportive of the sector’s inclusion in the introduction of digital radio, and acknowledged the critical role of community broadcasting in contributing to the diversity of media services.

The funding will support digital radio transmission and content delivery infrastructure for metro-wide community radio stations in the initial roll out of digital radio in capital cities. This will enable community digital services to commence in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The CBAA has long argued that Australian communities deserve access to the full range of radio services on the digital platform, and has been engaged with planning for digital radio since the early 90’s.

Content development is not included in the funding, and stations will be responsible for producing content for digital services. However, with infrastructure assistance, metropolitan community radio stations will now be able to confidently continue planning to extend their unique and diverse services to their various communities. With the capacity to deliver audio, text and images, digital radio opens up new opportunities for distributing content in a multi-platform environment.

CBAA President, Deborah Welch says that: “Community broadcasters are keen to get started on building our digital transmission facilities. We’ll continue to be the innovators in radio broadcasting and look forward to communicating with our listeners in new ways. It’s great the wait is finally over and we can get down to delivering the goods”.

While community radio will have limited access to digital capacity at this stage, the CBAA will continue to pursue equitable access to all broadcast platforms for the community broadcasting sector.

Community broadcasters are also keen to participate in the next phase of the digital roll out and look forward to the opportunity to trial digital radio in regional Australia. The CBAA has begun work with the commercial and public broadcasters in planning for digital radio in regional areas.
