Nothing is at it seems or should be. The timing is jumbled but immaculate; the vocal harmonies soar, slow down and then rise again. How the hell does Gothic Chicken manage this? Where has this band been and why have the cobwebs only just been lifted from them? Is that an organ I just heard and listen to that bass and percussion now melding into space rock and back again. This is so retro at times that it is futuristic, this is so annoying but surprisingly pleasant. The album is full of contradictions that as a musical piece it is a master piece.
Overthrow has a superb bass line surrounded by a conglomeration of sounds that assault one’s auditory senses in the best of ways, And As For Me starts off with political sloganeering that awakens one from a deep slumber, Pitta Bread Man should have been written by The Move, but it wasn’t, damn it, The Priest Hole takes one to unexpected place and……no, I’m not going to spoil it for you.
‘Lift The Cobwebs’ is enormous in its simplicity and simply put is enormous. This album deserves to go places where no other album has been. The musicianship and production is impeccable or should that be impeckable?
Whatever Gothic Chicken was raised on, I want it.
