Maestro on the Mic – The Last Show (for now)
Written by 3MDR on June 3, 2025
Veteran 3MDR broadcaster the Maestro will be taking a leave of absence from his show… for now. Listen to his final episode here and we hope to have him back on air in 2026.
THE LAST ONE, THE LAST SHOW FOR THE YEAR….BUT THE TARIFF REVENGE SHOW CONTINUED UNTIL MIDDAY!
Maestro on the Mic between 10.00a.m. and midday, the highest rating program bursting and blasting its way out of Upweywaywaywayway…Friday 30 May, 2025 with plenty of good Australian music.
No American music played at all due to tariff restrictions, Trumplike you could say. Being the last program of Maestro On The Mic this year the Maestro greedily played mostly the artists he liked (nothing new there) but time was agin him playing everyone.
Today we spoke to Grantlee Kieza about his new book ANNETTE KELLERMAN (Australian Mermaid) and followed up with Mic Conway who was on his world tour of New South Wales and Victoria.
What we did today:
- The Last Time – Rolling Stones
- The Calling – Mykl Lozin
- Take pity on the best – Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier (from the album Half Man Half Beast)
- O Louisa – Floyd Thursby with Dan Witton and Harry Lye (Every Days Another Dance)
- Fathers Day – Wisse
- Where do the children play – Cat Stevens (Saturnight – Live in Tokyo)
We interviewed Grantlee Keiza about his latest book published by ABC and consisting of 338 pages and various photographs. This was ANNETTE KELLERMAN (Australian Mermaid) who was a woman ahead of her time in terms of overcoming adversity and promoting good health and being a trail blazer in the sport of swimming. She also appeared in various films and pushed boundaries at a time where women were considered not so equal. Well worth a read. Listen in to learn about this great Australian.
7. I wish I had a sister – Suzannah Espie (Mother’s Not Feeling Herself Today)
8. E Mawehe ana au – Marlon Williams (Te Whaie Tiwehavela)
9. My opera careers over – Nurseratched/Robbie McFarlane (Catastrophically Ourselves)
10. Growing old disgracefully – Mic Conway (Diagonally Parked In a Parallel Universe)
We spoke to the legendary Mic Conway currently touring his way down New South Wales into High Street, Norfcote where the Wesley Ann is situated for a concert on Saturday 31 May. Check out his website for booking details. He had just finished a concert at Wangaratta where he played his famous Wangaratta Wahine song (performed when he was in Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band).
11. Wait for me Juanita – Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band
12. Cool water – Ryan Stirling (High Road)
13. Three weeks – Mast Gully Fellers (The Great Divide)
14. Silver hook tango – Kavisha Mazzella (Silver Hook Tango)
15. What’s in a kiss – Gilbert O’Sullivan (Songbook)
16. Firebelly – Pheasant Pluckers (Take Me There)
We also spoke for the last time with Ross from Swell Dames about their program and showcasing the talents of Lorenz Alexandria, a jazz singer from the 1950s.
17. You’re always there – Kerri Simpson (Maybe by Midnight)
18. I’ve been in it too long – Sherbet (Life)
The Maestro will not be on air again as Maestro On The Mic for the foreseeable future and certainly not until 2026. Enjoyed the journey at 3MDR and the listeners and those who subscribed to the station. No sausage music played and we endeavoured to play good Australian music. Our artists deserve a go! Listen to and buy their product!
