It has been quite a while since we have heard from Seraya Young, but the wait has proven that this singer/songwriter has a lyrical and melodic ability unmatched by others. The words sultry, sensuous and sophisticated could well be attached to this singer and not without reason. Her new release Inner Space is a delight…
‘Fire and Rose’ is a fable for adults warning of the dangers inherent in romance, as well as the underlying thrill of it all, and is beautifully scripted and sculpted. Lay back, take in the gentle but poignant guitar work, let your heart race as the drums roll in and drift away with Seraya’s vocals, but heed the underlying message. The whole musical balance is so fine, that it could easily have toppled in others hands, but Seraya masterfully holds it all together. She knows how to intertwine with the backing without swamping it, thus making it her very own. A fantastic song that deserves a sequel as we are left with the thought of ‘but what happens next….?’
‘Take Me Home’ draws the listener away from the city lights, noise and interactions to the simplicity of a more peaceful lifestyle where one can feel the earth on one’s feet and the rain against the body; a place many aspire to but do not always reach. It is also an allegorical tale, as it does not necessitate such a move as long as one can find inner peace and self-understanding. Seraya’s lyrics are full of lessons learnt, opportunities missed and the past revisited alongside some very intricate musical moves and she knows when and where to put that sultry vocal in.
The musical interplay and balance is outstanding and just as one becomes accustomed to her style, wham, she changes it with tracks like ‘Love Love Love’ which, if slightly changed, could easily become a jazz number. The timing in this track ensures that you will start moving to its beat and that is the beauty of Seraya – she captivates you, drawing one in like a she-wolf to her lair, except with no intention of harm! Another similarly styled track is ‘Lies’ whose message is more than relevant in these days of spin in romantic encounters.
Overall, this follows Seraya’s previous releases very well and unlike others, she has not remained stuck in a simple formulaic follow up. She is using her voice and its range to and for the best; this, mixed with some expertly crafted musical backing shows that Seraya is truly a Singer/Songwriter for our times.
