Another Music Review 3MDR Style

“Is REVOLVING neo-country? Is it crossover folk? Is it………it really does not matter as Jeff Tynan has released his debut EP in recent months and a track from it (Better I Was) is currently sitting well in the Amrap Metro Charts.

Revolving Around Itself grabs you and takes you straight into the album; upright bass, a slightly distant vocal and a modernesque country hoe down follows which would get the most staid of people to start foot stomping! This could also be a song of our times with the confusion of it so omnipresent in our daily lives. Perhaps the world is ‘Revolvin around Itself’ and we are but bystanders?

Look Around is a very astute track with a message for our Parliamentarians and for ourselves; are we to allow ourselves to be drawn into the fear and angst as portrayed by the powers that be and ignore refugees from wars we have started? Jeff asks if it is better to remain asleep as the truth is too daunting, but finishes the track off with:

‘Ya look alive so now…..LOOK AROUND’

The vocals and backing carry the listener forward, demanding a response; this is a very active and involving protest song. Ignore it at your peril.

Slow Down appears to be a very personal song which not everyone will be able to relate to, but I am sure that the most astute amongst us will do so.  ‘When I saw her with me and when she looked she found the real me…..’

Great lyrics and a resounding backing make this a stand-alone track, especially with its ‘false intro and outro’; it is a track full of insight and yet a degree of apprehension.

Jeff has brought an Australian approach to what could be an Americana/Roots type EP, but he has borrowed nothing and therefore owes nothing. This is the work of a man with not only insight and musical ability but, dare I say it, a mission too.

The guitars throughout are full of zest and the inclusion of mandolin, cello, fiddle and banjo add that certain extra element.

This is not an EP for everyone, but if you want something deeper and more meaningful than a lot of other 9 to 5 releases, this is the one for you.

Dear Friends of 3MDR On Saturday 17 January 3MDR will hold an outside broadcast from the old Police Station in Kilvington Drive, Emerald.

The broadcast will commence at 11am.

At NOON a proclamation will be read in which 3MDR, on behalf of the Emerald and wider Mountain District and Cardinia communities, will annex the old Police Station for community use.

It will be pirate radio at its best and we will run the Jolly Roger up the flagpole.

We need this to be a MAJOR event so need your help in attending and bringing as many supporters to the site as possible to make a splash with the media.

If you can dress as a pirate, all the better.

We will have a sausage sizzle and a face painter to pirate face the kiddies.

There will be live music.

Hope to see y'all there.

Music Reviews... 3MDR Style

We love to listen to and review local Aussie artists here at 3MDR...
If you are an Aussie muso & interested in us reviewing your tunes, drop us a line and we'll have a chat with you. Reviews can be used across a range of platforms to promote your music and to add to your general 'cred'.
Here's a review our music librarian, & general music nut, Tony did for Katie Harder:

Katie Harder’s album, Far To Go Yet, found its way into my hands by default and Ms Default well knows who she is!
I placed it on my player to listen to and to review and those words ‘Country’ bounced up at me from the genre box; what to do now? Run and hide and pretend I’d never received it or bite the bullet and listen to it. (One might have guessed, by now, that Country, per se, is not a genre I can relate to easily.)
As you can see, I bit the bullet and listened and was pleasantly surprised; I think Drink It In was the first track I heard and immediately I recognised that mellow sound of a double bass which took charge of the rhythm section, for me. Yes, there’s an element of ‘Country’ there, but I’d refer to it more as Neo – Country with lyrics that should really be in a folk song.
Katie’s voice is full of clarity and expression and the lyrics are so well written that I can see her progressing into a more folk like/roots direction; the instrumentation is beautiful and flows throughout the album and is not only distinctive but peculiar to each individual track. Her dobro playing is a gem in itself as is the work of Mike McArthy who also plays dobro, various guitars, synth, mandolin and more.
When and where this is accompanied by either the Rhodes/Wurlitzer or Hammond, the sound is so full it pulls one right in. It is not that often that musos achieve that near perfect balance but take a listen to Mike McArthy’s song Kangaroo paw and if you cannot understand what I am saying about that track, well, sorry, but you are the loser!
For those aficionados of the Oboe and violin, Moody Blue has been written just for you; an instrumental of immense but subtle power.
Carry It Easy appears to be a very personal tale with which many of us could and should relate to: ‘The you and the me, together are we…….’ such simple phraseology, such a brief song but one full of emotion that Katie does not repetitiously ram down one’s throat.
And that is the essence of her work: here I am, listen, learn, enjoy, relate to these lyrics and join me on a better journey.
Due credit must also be given to all those who accompanied Katie on this album, for they have brought her music and lyrics to life.
So, can I recommend this album? Certainly and it is not one of those which needs re-visiting in order to understand it, but it does need re-visiting as it is a wonderful composition.
