On Tuesday the 26th January, 2016, the ninth annual Belgrave Survival Day event will once again celebrate Indigenous culture and the survival of Australia's First Nations people through 227 years of white settlement.

This year’s festival will focus on the theme of No room for Racism, and is a free and family friendly event.

This year we are graced with the presence of legendary Kutcha Edwards, who is one of Australia’s most respected and inspiring Aboriginal singer/songwriters. Kutcha’s music, theatre and community work has made him a legend in the Indigenous community, throughout Australia and internationally.

Also taking the stage this year will be The Deans, who will bring classic sounds and grooves with velvet smooth vocals, sweet harmonies, soaring heartbreak guitar, deep Motown bass grooves and hip-shaking rhythms.

As well as the fabulous voices of the Mullum Mullum Choir and the vibes of the Hip Hop Crew. Then be calmed as you participate in a Digeridoo Mediation with Gnarnayarrahe Waitiarie (Uncle Joey).

The Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony will be led by Wurundjeri elder and educator, Uncle Bill Nicholson, followed by traditional dances performed by ‘The Djirri Djirri’ dance mob where the audience will be invited to join in.  Aunty Dot Peters will also grace us with her presence and share some of her wisdom.

This year our theme has tried to tie in with events around Australia and emphasise the growing sentiments that there is “NO ROOM FOR RACISM”. There will be speakers who will address the issue of on-going racism in Australian culture, society and politics.

All of this will be overseen by Uncle Peter Rotumah who will MC the event.

There will be plenty of activities to keep the kids (and adults) busy with fun music and dance, art and craft opportunities and more. As well as the children’s playground.

Soak up the atmosphere on a picnic rug in front of the stage or a stroll around the market and information stalls. Catering for all food requirements, including traditional bush tucker and a variety of food truck. This event is alcohol-free.

Due to parking limitations around the park we strongly encourage people to catch public transport, Carpool or park at Belgrave Train Station where you can take a quick 5 minute walk to Borthwick Park.

The event will be simulcast on 3MDR 97.1 FM.
