It is with great sadness that we share the following news.
Rhett Thompson suffered a major stroke on the evening of the 15th March, which was caused by a blood clot.
We received a call on Tuesday 21st March that Rhett's health was critical with severe brain damage. Rhett has been in an induced coma since the operation. Rhett's partner, Kristen, has made the difficult decision to take Rhett off life support and allow him to pass. Rhett passed away on Tuesday 21st March 2017.
Our deepest sympathies are with Rhett's partner, Kristen, his family, friends, and colleagues.
Rhett's sudden passing is a major blow to 3MDR.
Rhett had been involved with 3MDR for approximately five years, as a supporter and sponsor of 3MDR with his business, Auspit.
We enjoyed every encounter with Rhett, without exception, finding him to be a passionate, affable kind of bloke. A raconteur, with good humour, and good intent, a pleasure to be around.
We have fully appreciated Rhett's commitment and passion for our beloved organisation, since he joined the leadership team in September last year... We were so looking forward to working with Rhett and, as part of the team, see 3MDR reach new heights with its service and accessibility to our communities.
Rhett, in his short time with us at 3MDR, achieved a considerable amount of work. 3MDR's Policy documentation review, the works he undertook and assisted with in repairing and reinstalling the backup generator at the transmitter site and building a New Premises working group to help secure better accommodation for our broadcasting operations, all undertaken with enthusiasm, dedication and a love for 3MDR. Sadly Rhett will not be here to see these projects, in particular the new premises, come to fruition.
3MDR must follow the example set by our friend and ensure that the station, despite this devastating setback, continues to work together for the benefit of the whole community and honor Rhett's legacy.
We have passed on sympathies and support to Rhett's partner, Kristen, on behalf of 3MDR.
Should you have any messages of condolences, kindly send them through to the 3MDR office. We assure you they will be passed on to Kristen at an appropriate time.
